Gynecomastia Correction (Male Breast Reduction)
Mastectomy for gynecomastia is a procedure that reduces the size of the male breast. In many cases this is done primarily with liposuction, although sometimes the breast tissue directly behind the areola requires removal using an incision around the areola.
Good candidates for this procedure are men who have relatively large breasts and do not have a treatable hormonal or medication cause for the condition. Fullness in the breast without a lot of excess skin is ideal. When there is a lot of sagging or excess skin, a longer scar may be needed. Patients should be healthy and not currently smoking.
Surgery and Recovery
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and patients go home the same day. Recovery is 5-7 days for the discomfort to gradually reduce. Time off of work is usually one week. Strenuous activity is avoided for 3-4 weeks. Small scars are left where the liposuction device enters the skin, and sometimes around the areola region. Scars lighten over a 6-12 month period.
